No Alcohol on National highways, Supreme Court Orders

Starting from 1 April, all the Liquor shops on the highways will not be allowed and liquor banners and ads are removed, the Supreme Court said today.  Liquor shops must be at least 500 meters away from state and national highways. The license of existing shops will not be renewed.

The top court had indicated that it would order the shutting of all liquor shops on highways for the safety and security of commuters who get distracted, which caused accidents. Court was hearing petitions challenging various high court verdicts which held that liquor shops be located at a distance from state highways so that they are neither visible nor accessible to the commuters.

The orders have to be implemented by the Chief Secretary and police chiefs of states.
